Join us for the October 8, 2022 meeting for a talk on the “Power of Words”. Poet Vera Gómez will share her work and lead an interactive discussion and immersive writing exercise on why and how poetic sounds surround you every day.

About Vera Gómez:

A habitual border-crosser between her American upbringing and Mexican heritage, Vera is a workshop facilitator, performance poet and a teaching poet. Her poetry chapbook, Barrio Voices, was published in 2008 and her work has appeared in State of the Heart: Carolina Writers on the Places They Love, Volume II; ARCHIVE; Ties that Bind, Quintet, Kakalak and the Emrys Journal.

Vera supports collaborative work and in 2019 curated a bilingual reading, Voces Nuevas - Raising Latinx Voices in South Carolina, for the Deckle Edge Literary Festival. She has also been named to The Jaspar Project’s Supper Table: An Array of Remarkable SC Women, a multidisciplinary arts project honoring the women who made and continue to make South Carolina better.

Additionally, Vera has teamed with the Indie Grits Festival’s Visones project (2017); presented a Chautauqua Talk on Caesar Chavez (2017); introduced “Improv Poetry” at Read Up, Greenville (2017); and has been part of the Free Verse: Charleston Poetry Festival (2018) and Columbia, SC Rain Poetry Project (2019).
